Ayurveda for the Sniffles

As we move from Winter into Spring, this time of year can bring about coughs and colds as well as allergies

Both can result in bunged up noses, coughing, sneezing and watery eyes. Having these symptoms can range from mild irritation to debilitating.

Get On Top of Congestion

If you start to feel the onset of either, then doing Jala Neti and / or Kappalbhati can help to clear the nasal passages. If you are unfamiliar with these practices, then it is recommended to speak to a qualified Ayurveda Practitioner or Yoga Teacher for guidance.

Tulsi (Holy Basil) is great for the health of the respiratory system and immune system and is easily available in the form of tea.

Feeling bunged up? Then try to reduce mucus forming foods - dairy is a big one as is chocolate (sorry!)

Help Your Immune System

If you suffer from allergies or feel like you pick up every cold going, then improving the health of your immune system (or ojas as it is known in Ayurveda) is essential. A few basic things to help get you started are:

  • Drink a cup of warm to hot water first thing in the morning.
  • Eat 3 - 5 soaked and peeled almonds around 15 mins after drinking the water (the soaking and peeling are super important)
  • Go for a walk in nature for at least 15 minutes every day
  • Get enough sleep
